I attached an “after” pitching books photograph. Note, there are empty spaces on our bookshelves. Before, every slot was filled and many of the shelves had a second row of stashed hidden books! John and I have always kept all our books and magazines… so they would be there when we wanted to reread or reference them. Did we? Not often ~ and with libraries it is time to give them new homes. The garage is full already of “stuff” to give away. I’m just afraid that 6 Points, our local Goodwill and the library will tell me “NO MORE’!
Presently, I am letting go of things that even six months ago I was sure I wanted to keep forever. I plan to sort my genealogy collection and share as much as possible with the Missouri History Museum knowing that they will take good care of our treasures, opening up our family history to others who are searching.
My kids say they don’t want the family crystal, china nor furniture, just a few items each and that too is fine with me. If I don’t want these things why should I shoulder my kids with what I don’t want? I am packing these treasures to take to Houston and sell to antique dealers so that someone else can enjoy what we have loved for so long. I just don’t need so much “stuff” anymore. The past 3 years my husband and I shared a 900 sq. ft. apartment and were perfectly happy. One closet for both of us and we had lots of room for more things that we did not need nor buy.
What is happening to me? Where did the desire go for new clothes, nicknacks and a big home? It’s not important anymore. I would rather share what I have with old and new friends and have adventures chalk full of wonderful memories instead of things. Soon we will be starting our new lives as gypsies, with the clothes on our backs and no doubt a U-Haul of treasures … but be assured, it won’t be the largest truck available!
